37.084 Coleophora sternipennella (Speckled Case-bearer)
ws: 10.5-15.0mm; Jul-Aug; Orache (Atriplex spp), goosefoot (Chenopodium spp); locally common throughout England and Wales, but most common in SE.
ID: Keyed from both Group D: Forewing obscurely streaked, with pale costa. Streaks overlaid with scattered fuscous scales > 4 species
Most similar to C.saxicolella which averages larger (ws 13-16mm) and is usually more heavily marked with fuscous scales and according to the key in MBGBI3 its veins are more distinct.
Male genitalia: Lateral margin of sacculus finely crenulate; transtilla smooth (with a scabrid area in C.saxicolella); aedeagus with tooth almost reaching end of prong (about its own width distant from end of prong in C.saxixolella).
Female genitalia: Bursa copulatrix with a standard thorn and a linear spiculate patch; proximal ductus bursae heavily spiculate; incision in posterior margin of subgenital plate 'V'-shaped (broad, shallow and 'U'-shaped in C.saxicolella).
