Small - ws:4.5-16mm
Head with vertex smooth or rough-haired
Antennae simple, slightly shorter to slightly longer than forewing; scape with or without pecten
Labial palps moderate to long, slender, porrect or ascending. Maxillary palps present but sometimes minute. Proboscis present, unscaled.
Forewings lanceolate without tornal angle. Hindwings lanceolate with long dorsal cilia
Legs smooth or with bristles but without long hairs
Larvae undergo 'hypermetamorphosis': early instars drink sap as leaf-miners, later instars chew parenchyma - a change requiring major restructuring of head capsule and mouthparts. It is this feature that places Phyllocnistinae in this family (the adults appearing more like Lyonetiidae).
Adults are mostly crepuscular.
