49.212 Ancylis apicella (Streaked Hook-wing)
ws: 12-17mm; bivoltine May-Jun, Jul-Aug; buckthorn (Rhamnus catharticus), alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus); NS-B in wood & fen S.England, S.Wales and more local and scarce further north in England and Wales.
Synonym: Anchlopera siculana (Pierce & Metcalfe)
Synonym: Anchlopera siculana (Pierce & Metcalfe)
ID: 7 Ancylis species have a fairly well-demarcated brown dorso-basal blotch. In the other 6 species this blotch is fairly 'solid', only in A.apicella does it become more diffuse towards the dorsum. 2 or 3 black dashes in the midline in the distal half of the forewing and a narrow brown elongate costal strigula arising at around the centre of the costa and directed apically seem to be good field marks and the apex is more hooked than in other Ancylis species. BTM gives an acutely angled median fascia as the best field mark to distinguish this species (and this is followed by most other moth websites, but not by Sterling & Parsons) - this interpretation relies on interpreting the aforementioned narrow costal strigula and a dark mark dorsal to the black apical dashes as the median fascia and extrapolating an angulation between these marks.
