73.274 Mamestra brassicae (Cabbage Moth)
fw: 14-22mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 34-50mm (MBGBI9); (Jan-)May-Oct(-Dec) probably trivoltine in south, univoltine Jun-Jul in north; almost any herbaceous plant, but best known as a pest of cultivated Brassicaceae; common throughout lowland GB.
ID: Forewing ground colour usually dark brownish grey; subbasal, antemedian and postmedian lines usually discernible but indistinct; subterminal line usually distinct and white in the south, but absent or vestigial in the north, when present it shows a 'W' in its dorsal half, the points not reaching the termen; kidney mark outlined in white, often incompletely; foretibia with a curved apical spur (absent in all similar species).
