59.013 Hipparchia semele (Grayling)
ws: m51-56mm, f54-62mm; Jul-Sep; Bristle Bent (Agrostis curtisii), Early Hair-grass (Aira praecox), Red Fescue (Festuca rubra), Sheep's-fescue (Festuca ovina); common on heaths grassland with sparse vegetation in coastal counties throughout GB.
ssp semele - England & Wales.
ssp thyone - west side of Great Ormes Head, N.Wales - small (ave ws 47-48mm), less contrast on underside with pale areas tinged ochreous, forewing spots small, the median spot sometimes absent, flies Jun-Jul.
ssp scota - SW and E.Scotland - upperside ground colour pale yellowish-orange, underside dark
ssp atlanta - NW Scotland including Western Isles - probably not distinct from ssp scota?

ID: Always rests with wings closed, often with only the hindwing visible. Forewing underside yellow-orange with a prominent white-centred black eye spot near apex and a second similar spot medially; underside hindwing dark grey-brown, marbled with white and with an irregular white band running from mid-costa towards the tornus.
