70.065 Euphyia unagnulata (Sharp-angled Carpet)
fw: 13-15mm; Jun-Aug; unknown (accepts Stellaria spp - chickweed/stitchworts); local in woodland in S.England, E.Anglia and W.Wales
ID: Dark median fascia and white post-median fascia, the border between these is smooth and comes to a point centrally; dark basal and subbasal fasciae discernible and separated by narrow white subbasal and antemedian lines; broad dark terminal fascia divided by a narrow white subterminal line. Hindwing pale at base with a little dusky suffusion and dark central spot; broad dark terminal fascia divided by a narrow white subterminal line. Epirrhoe alternata (Common Carpet) is similarly marked - the border between dark median and white postmedian fasciae is more undulating and the white postmedian fascia is divided by a grey line (only faintly seen in E.unangulata); its hindwing base shows a heavy dusky suffusion and a white postmedian fascia divided by a diffuse dusky line. Epirrhoe rivata (Wood Carpet) is also similar and usually has only a faint dark line through the white postmedian fascia but it is larger (fw 14-16mm), has a white subbasal fascia and like E.alternata it has a more undulating border between the dark median and white postmedian fasciae.

nb the bursa copulatrix of Epirrhoe species shows a thickened scobinate ridge and a discoid scobinate signum; the ostium-introitus is also quite different and doesn't show the 'funnel'-shape of E.unangulata.
