49.320 Dichrorampha alpinana (Orange-spot Daisy Moth)
ws: 13-15mm; Jun-Aug; ox-eye daisy (Leucanthemum vulgare); local in S.England and S.Wales
Synonym: Hemimene alpinana (Pierce & Metcalfe)
Synonym: Hemimene alpinana (Pierce & Metcalfe)
ID: Very similar to D.flavidorsana. Distinguished by broader medio-dorsal blotch; fuscous hindwing, light towards base (uniformly dark fuscous in D.flavidorsana); longer costal fold of forewing in male, extending to median fascia (extending to 1/3 and not reaching median fascia in D.flavidorsana). However, genital dissection is needed for confident separation of these species, at least for the females.
Genital drawings are shown in BTM and both sexes of both species are shown at dissection group.
Male genitalia: The tunica of the aedeagus has a serrate dorsal margin near the apex in D.alpinana, smooth in D.flavidorsana.
Female genitalia: The illustrated, but not described, differences between the species concern the ostium and introitus vaginae; however the illustrations in BTM are not entirely consistent with the comparison of images at dissection group. The critical feature appears to be a an extension of the sclerotised anterior margin of the ostium around the left side of the ostium towards the posterior margin in D.alpinana and not in D.flavidorsana.
