73.154 Apamea remissa (Dusky Brocade)
fw: 17-19mm (Waring & Townsend), ws: 36-42mm (MBGBI10); Jun-Jul; grasses (Poaceae); common throughout GB
ID: Vary variable with 3 distinct forms and can be similar to several other species. Antenna: male - setose, female - finely ciliate.
Form remissa: Forewing grey with black basal streak, paradorsal bar, terminal fascia and a more diffusely blackish median fascia in which the paler stigmata are relatively prominent, pale antemedian and postmedian lines well-marked dorsally but obsolescent costally, pale subterminal line with a distinct 'W' in the dorsal half.
Form obscura: Forewing brownish, lacks the black markings and has relatively obscure stigmata and cross-lines.
Form submissa is intermediate.
A.furva (Confused) has a scale tuft at the base of the forewing dorsum, a straighter costa and two narrow dark cross-bands on the forewing underside (only one in A.remissa); the kidney mark is larger in A.remissa, occupying ~1/3 the forewing width vs 1/4 in A.furva.
A.oblonga (Crescent Striped) averages larger (fw: 18-21mm) and has a straighter costa.
A.anceps (Large Nutmeg) has some sandy marbling especially towards the termen.
Mniotype adusta (Dark Brocade) has a more pointed forewing apex.
Lacanobia thalassina (Pale-shouldered Brocade) is similar to form remissa but has a more conspicuous pale patch at the forewing base and hairy eyes.
