04.082 Ectoedemia intimella (White-spot Sallow Dot)
ws: 5-6mm (MBGBI1); Jun; leaf-mine Oct; sallows (especially Salix caprea); locally common in England & Wales
ID: 4 Nepticulid species have a dark forewing with a dorsal pale spot and no other forewing markings: Stigmella catharticella, Fomoria septembrella, Ectoedemia intimella and Ectoedemia heringella. In the two Ectoedemia species the pale spot is placed just distal to halfway along the dorsum, while in the remaining species it is more distally placed (near the tornus). E.intimella has a noticeably pale antennal flagellum of similar colour to the scape; in the other species the flagellum is distinctly darker than the scape. Male E.intimella has an ochreous hair pencil on the hindwing underside adjacent to the frenulum; E.heringella lacks any hair pencil, but has an elongate patch of brown androconial scales on the forewing underside.
Male genitalia: Tegumen produced into broad pseuduncus; gnathos with broad rounded median lobe; valva broad-based then narrowing, medial margin concave, apex pointed; aedeagus with pair of pointed ventral carinae and a pair of pointed dorsolateral carinae with additional spines (ref: Nepticuoidea.info).
