fw: 16-20mm; May-Jul; bog-myrtle (Myrica gale), heather (Calluna vulgaris), bilberry (Vaccinium myrtillus), sallows (Salix spp); local in moorland, bogs and heaths north of Staffordshire - Lincolnshire.
ssp menyanthidis occurs in the N.England, N.Wales and SE.Scotland; ssp scotica occurs in the rest of Scotland.

ID: Ssp menyanthidis: forewing ground colour ranges from very pale to dark grey; black marks include a basal streak, a subbasal cross-line, outlines of the oval (usually complete) and kidney mark (usually incomplete), a postmedian line and a streak crossing the dorsal end of the postmedian line; the postmedian line is lined whitish on its proximal margin; hindwing pale brownish-fuscous. Ssp scotica averages larger with a paler forewing ground colour and more contrasting markings; hindwing brownish.
