ws: m44-48mm, f46-52mm; Jul-Aug; blue/purple moor-grass (Sesleria caerulea /Molinia caerulea; N&W.Scotland and 2 English colonies in Cumbria at Arnside Knott and Smardale Gill.
ssp aethiops - NE.Scotland and the English colonies - often has 4 or 5 eye-spots on forewing
ssp caledonia - W.Scotland - smaller (ws 33-42mm) with never more than 3 eye-spots on forewing

ID: Upperside dark brown to blackish with a prominent subterminal orange band containing black eye-spots most of which have a white centre.
E.epiphron (Mountain Ringlet) is similar but lacks the white centres to the black eye-spots
