70.234 Ennomos alniaria (Canary-shouldered Thorn)
fw: 16-20mm; Jul-Oct; downy/silver
birch (Betula pubescens/pendula), elms (Ulmus spp), limes (Tilia spp); common throughout GB
ID: canary-yellow thorax; distal cross-line
steeply angled compared with E.quercinaria (August Thorn) and E.erosaria
(September Thorn) so that it meets the costa more distally (at 3/4 - 4/5 compared
with 2/3); distal cross-line meets costa in a smooth arc (kinked near costa in
E.quercinaria); central crescent mark usually present between the cross-lines
(usually absent or very faint in E.erosaria); orange-yellow ground colour of
wings and a variable amount of darker speckling evenly distributed across
forewing (band distal to distal cross-line clearly darker in E.fuscantaria
(Dusky Thorn).
