Diurnal, best found with use of pheromone lures (which only attract males)
Antennae sexually dimorphic - more specialised in males; Labial palp moderate with coloured scales
Synanthedon spp rest with wings open, other genera rest with wings alongside body. Forewing very narrow; Wing coupling unique - posterior margin of forewing folded down, anterior margin of hindwing folded up,interlocking by a series of recurved spines; frenulum and retinaculum also present; Scales absent from most of both wings (hence 'clearwing'). Abdomen usually black with yellow or red bands; Prominent expansile anal tuft.
