54.004 Zygaena purpuralis caledonensis (Transparent Burnet)
ws: 25-34mm, fw: 14-16mm; Jun-Jul; wild thyme (Thymus polytrichus); NS-A Inner Hebrides and Ardnamurchan
subspecies segontii occurred on the Llyn peninsula, Caernarvonshire, but has not been seen since 1962 and is presumed extinct. In MBGBI2 this species is placed in a separate subgenus, Mesembrynus, on the basis of genital differences. Male: processes of uncus medium length or reduced to short lobes vs long in subgenus Zygaena. Female: ductus bursae weakly or not sclerotised vs strongly sclerotised in subgenus Zygaena. ID: Forewing with three longitudinal streaks formed from spot 1, spots 2+4 and spots 3+5+6. |
