74.009 Nycteola revayana (Oak Nycteoline)
fw: 11-13mm; Jul-Jun, possibly bivoltine in south, overwinters as adult; pedunculate oak (Quercus robur); local in broadleaved woodland throughout GB.
ID: Recognized more by its size and shape with a strongly ‘shouldered’ forewing costa than by the extremely variable forewing pattern. May be confused with Acleris species (Family: Tortricidae) which are slimmer and usually smaller - A.cristana has a central forewing scale-tuft, A.hastiana has much shorter labial palps. §10 closely resembles N.asiatica (Eastern Nycteoline) in forewing pattern, but that species has a much less steeply arched costal base (shoulder)
Female genitalia: based on comparing images at Moth Dissection, the main difference between N.revayana and N.asiatica is in the sclerotisation in the ductus bursae. In both there is a ~quadrangular spiculate patch; in N.revayana this patch is more elongate (3-4x longer than wide) and there is an additional smaller patch in a diverticulum anterior to it; in N.asiatica the patch is broader (<2x as long as wide) and there is no additional anterior patch.
