Suborder:Glossata Infraorder:Heteroneura Superfamily:Epermenioidea
All British species are in Subfamily: Eperminiinae; Tribe: Phaulernini - Genus: Phaulernis (2S); Tribe: Epermeniini - Genus: Epermenia (6S)
Ref: MBGBI3
Head smooth-scaled; Ocelli absent; Antennal scape with awning of scales but without bristles; Maxillary palps 3-segmented, folded; Labial palps ascending; Forewing lanceolate often with dorsal scale-tufts; V7 to termen, V7&8 stalked or not, V1a+1b furcate; Hindwing lanceolate; V6&7 approximate or stalked; Hindtibia with numerous bristles
MBGBI3 is confusing on the distinction between the two genera. In the family introduction it states that it is based on the presence (Phaulernis) or absence (Epermenia) of coremata (hair-pencils) on abdominal S8 of the adult male. In the introduction to Phaulernis it states "abdomen of male without pocket concealing hair-pencil" And in the introduction to Epermenia it states "abdomen of male with pocket concealing hair-pencil". My working assumption from this is that coremata are present in both genera but in Epermenia they are concealed within a pocket.
