04.030 Stigmella hybnerella (Shining Hawthorn Dot)
ws: 4-5mm; bivoltine Apr-May, Jul-Aug; leaf mine in hawthorn (Crataegus spp) May-Jun, Jul-Sep; common throughout GB
ID: Both sexes have forewing with a pale shining metallic silver fascia in distal half of forewing, without other pale spots; terminal cilia not abruptly whitish and without metallic or purple scales at base; basal half not purple.
Male S.hybnerella has a black head, female head may be black, ferruginous or mixed.
With head ferruginous (§1) > 5 species
Bohemannia auriciliella has a narrower more proximal 'fascia', which is better interpreted as costal and dorsal spots that almost form a fascia, with the dorsal spot extended basally along the dorsum; brassy basal half of forewing.
S. hybnerella (female) has eyecaps white tinged yellow; forewing greenish-golden to brownish-golden at base, bright fuscous purple at apex
S.marginocolella (female) is larger (ws5-6); eyecaps whitish-orange has forewing purplish-golden at base, deep purplish brown at apex
S.tengstroemi is a northern montaine species; S.speciosa has the fascia only slightly distal to centre of forewing.
With head black (§2) > base of forewing not shining coppery-red; silver fascia without a proximal purple fascia; collar fuscous; basal part of forewing without a purple gloss > S.hybnerella
