73.341 Standfussiana lucernea (Northern Rustic)
fw: 17-21mm (Waring & Townsend), ws 36-46mm (MBGBI9); Jun-Sep; various herbaceous plants; local on coastal cliff and mountains in western Britain from Isle of Wight to Scotland.
ID: Forewing ground colour ranges from brownish grey to blackish with a variable dusting of yellowish-brown or greyish-brown; markings indistinct, stigmata obscured, antemedian and postmedian lines usually discernable; hindwing dark with white cilia. Hadena caesia (Grey) is similarly obscurely marked but is smaller (fw: 15-17mm) and has a different (not described in Waring) hindwing pattern. Rhyacia simulans (Dotted Rustic) may be similar but has a larger oval and dotted crosslines. Spaelotis ravida (Stout Dart) has a dark streak enclosing the oval mark and a pale hindwing.
