70.102 Coenotephria salicata (Striped Twin-spot Carpet)
fw: 12-15mm; May-Jul; bedstraws (Galium spp); common in upland moorland in N.England and Scotland
ID: Fairly weakly-marked with several cross-lines, a darker central cross-band and a black somewhat elongate central forewing spot. Ground colour varies from pale to dark grey and may show some grey-brown or grey-green shades. Perizoma didymata (Twin-spot Carpet) has much more prominent 'twin-spots' in the subterminal cross-band. Entephria caesiata (Grey Mountain Carpet) is larger (fw 16-19mm) and usually more distinctly marked. E.flavicinctata (Yellow-ringed Carpet) ssp flavicinctata has a distinct dusting of yellow scales through the forewing cross-bands but in ssp ruficinctata these yellow scales are much reduced and can then appear quite similar to some C.salicata. If the size range quoted by Waring & Parsons were correct, C.salicata could be distinguished on size, but I have obtained E.flavicinctata down to fw 13.9mm and Wikipedia quotes ws for E.flavinctata down to 27mm (~fw 13mm) - so size is unlikely to provide a valid distinction. The terminal line of paired black marks either side of the veins reaching the termen may provide a target for further analysis - in my specimens of E.flavicinctata these marks are fine dashes, while in C.salicata (and E.caesiata) they are bold spots. Genital dissection may be needed to confirm identity.
Male genitalia: E.caesiata and C.salicata but not E.flavicinctata are shown at Moth Dissection, all three are illustrated and described by Pierce.
The Entephria species show a projection from the valval costa which is lacking in C.salicata.
Female genitalia: E.caesiata and C.salicata but not E.flavicinctata are shown at Dissection Group, all three are illustrated and described by Pierce.
The signum of Entephria species is a scobinate streak while that of C.salicata is a small scobinate patch with a raised bar.
