ws: 12-17mm; Jul-Aug; grey/goat willow (Salix cinerea/caprea) aspen, black poplar (Populus nigra); common throughout GB.
Synonym: Evetria nisella (Pierce & Metcalfe)
Synonym: Evetria nisella (Pierce & Metcalfe)
ID: BTM suggests that the cinereous colouration found in all forms is characteristic of this species.
Polymorphic with several named forms which intergrade.
Form nisella: black,fulvous or ferruginous dorsal blotch from basal patch to pre-tornal area, variable in shape and definition.
Form pavonana: dorsal blotch extends into the basal patch and to the tornus
Form decorana: median fascia obsolete, whole median area overlaid with fulvous or ochreous-brown
Form cinereana: grey, without a solid dorsal blotch - identical in external appearance to E.cinereana (which see)
Male genitalia: Aedeagus with 40-50 cornuti (18-20 in E.cinereana)
