16.017 Swammerdamia pyrella (Copper-fringed Drab)
ws: 10-13mm; bivoltine May, Aug; apple (Malus spp), pear (Pyrus spp) hawthorn (Crataegus spp); common throughout GB except N.Scotland
Swammerdamia pyrella §2 female
ID: Very similar to others in the Swammerdamia group; may be distinguished by having the terminal cilia tinged coppery, but genital confirmation may be needed for confident identification.
Male genitalia: Apex of valva rounded; saccus not expanded at apex; aedeagus shorter than armature; valvae ~2x longer than broad, apex of aedeagus tapered > S.pyrella/S.passerella. These two have very similar genitalia according to the drawings in MBGBI3. There may a difference in the position of the rounded angulation of the ventral edge of the valvae: in S.pyralella this occurs at ~1/2 from base to apex of the valva, in S.passerella it occurs at ~1/3. (S.passerella is confined to the Scottish Highlands)
Female genitalia: Ductus bursae much < 10x length of corpus bursae; posterior portion of DB strongly sclerotised; sclerotised portion of DB narrow (1/4-1/5 of distance between anterior apophyses) > S.pyrella/S.passerella (S.passerella is confined to Scottish Highlands)
