73.337 Cerastis leucographa (White-marked)
ws: 35-39mm (MBGBI9), fw: 14-16mm (Waring & Townsend); Mar-Apr; probably various herbaceous plants and sallows (Salix spp); local in open broadleaved woodland in England and Wales.
ID: Dull reddish forewing with distinct whitish oval and kidney marks; male antenna distinctly bipectinate. Similar to C.rubricosa (Red Chestnut) which usually has a brighter pinkish-red or purplish forewing with more obscure oval and kidney marks, and the male antenna is only very shortly bipectinate. There is, however, considerable variation in the clarity of the stigmata in both species - §1 (the only specimen I have yet obtained) seems to be atypical in lacking any apparent oval mark.
