ID: ssp satyrata - Weakly-marked, non-descript, grey-brown; costa straight, apex pointed; veins chequered black and white; subterminal line of white spots, that nearest tornus being largest; central spot small or absent. E.virgaureata (Goldenrod Pug) also shows chequered veins but it has a strong central forewing spot. E.vulgata (Common Pug) does not show chequered veins and its tornal white spot is not noticeably larger than other white spots in the subterminal line. Both E.virgaureata and E.vulgata have an arched costa.
ssp callunaria is smaller, with more prominent darker brown bands. ssp curzoni is stated in Waring & Parsons to have "bold dark brown and white cross-lines and bands", however the drawing of this subspecies shows darker and paler brown bands and no white lines or bands.
