70.054 Xanthorhoe montanata (Silver-ground Carpet)
fw: 14-17mm; May-Jul; various herbaceous plants; common throughout GB
ID: Characterised by the whitish ground colour. 2 subspecies. Ssp montanata occurs throughout GB except Shetland and is polymorphic and variable. Central band varies in width; in colour from light grey-brown to dark black-brown and has a variable white component in the costal half. Form degenerata has the central band split into two blotches. Form costimaculata has the central band reduced to a small costal blotch. Ssp shetlandica is confined to Shetland, is smaller, has a browner ground colour showing little contrast with the central cross-band.
X.fluctuata (Garden Carpet) can be similar but the markings are black rather than brown and include a black basal fascia 'continuous' with a black thorax and a black mark on the costa near the apex; its central cross-band is also usually much less strongly marked in the dorsal half.
