73.172 Mesoligia furuncula (Cloaked Minor)
fw: 10-12mm (Waring & Townsend) 9.1-12.4mm (my specimens); ws: 22-28mm (MBGBI10); Jul-Sep; grasses (Poaceae); common in S.England and Wales, local in N.England and Scotland.
ID: More slender and with a narrower forewing than other ‘minors’. Very variable: Form bicoloria has white median and subterminal lines, the basal area proximal to the median line and the terminal area distal to the subterminal line is brown and the area between the cross-lines whitish – this form appears ‘cloaked’ in its resting posture and gives rise to the English name for the species. Another form has median and postmedian lines with a narrow median fascia; this form resembles Litoligia literosa (Rosy Minor) but lacks the pinkish shades. Form reticulata is brownish with a whitish kidney mark and marbled with greyish-white and brown. The plain forms rufuncula and terminalis may be light straw to dark brown with little trace of any markings; in from terminalis the area between the subterminal line and termen is contrastingly dark. Form latistriata is pale with a long dark dorsal streak. Antenna: male - fasciculate, female - simple.
