49.270 Eucosma aemulana
ws: 11-16mm (MBGBI5.2), fw: 5.0-7.5mm (Sterling & Parsons); Jul-Aug; goldenrod (Solidago virgaurea); NS-B open woodland, chalk downs and coastal cliffs mainly in SE.England
ID: Similar to E.tripoliana, (Pierce and Metcalfe treated them as conspecific), which feeds on Aster tripolium (sea aster) and occupies a saltmarsh habitat. E.tripoliana averages larger, but there is considerable overlap. Both species vary in the strength (darkness) of the markings, but pale forms are more common in E.tripoliana and rare in E.aemulana (BTM). Other than the above, I have not been convinced that any external or male genital feature reliably separates these two species. §1 is identified largely on the basis that it was found to the east of the Lake District where golden-rod is far more likely to be present than sea aster.
