12.019 Nemapogon ruricolella (Rufous Fungus Moth)
ws: 10-14mm; Jun-Jul; NS-B local in woodland and heathland in S.England more common in West.
ID: Similar to other Nemapogon species. See Nemapogon identification. Where N.cloacella and N.ruricolella appear similar they may be distinguished by the more uniform reddish ochreous ground colour of the latter especially in the apical area of the forewing. However, genital dissection is required for confident ID.
Female genitalia: All 6 Nemapogon species are figured in MBGBI2 (pp176-177) and all 6 are shown at dissection group. There is no description available from either reference. The most apparent diagnostic differences occur in the lamina antevaginalis (ventral plate of the sterigma). The shape of this plate in N.ruricolella (illustrated below) is quite distinctive.
