73.118 Celaena haworthii (Haworth's Minor)
ws: 25-30mm (MBGBI10), fw: 10-14mm (Waring & Townsend); Aug-Sep; common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium); locally common in boggy moorland in Scotland, N.England and N.Wales; more local in S.England in Exmoor, Dartmoor, the Test and Itchin Valleys and Norfolk Broads.
ID: Forewing ranges from grey-brown to red-brown (fenland specimens tending to be paler and brighter), with a darker broad median fascia usually discernible; usually a prominent small whitish oval; prominent larger whitish kidney with two white streaks extending distally from its dorsal end towards a pale subterminal fascia of variable prominence; usually a narrow pale dorsal streak. Male antenna fasciculate-ciliate, female shortly ciliate. Helotropha leucostigma (Crescent) has a similar general pattern including the bold white kidney mark with 2 white streaks extending from it towards the termen a variable pale subterminal fascia and a variable pale dorsal streak. H.leucostigma is larger (ws:35-41, fw:14-17mm) and has a more pointed forewing apex; its oval mark is nearly as large as the kidney mark and is either indistinct or pale outlined.
