49.078 Acleris aspersana (Small Rufous Tortrix)
ws: ♂15-17mm, ♀13-15mm (MBGBI5.1), fw: 5-8mm (Sterling & Parsons); Jun-Sep; various herbaceous plants; locally common in open country habitats throughout GB.
ID: Forewing ground colour ochreous-yellow; markings brick-red as follows - base of costa; a short oblique line from near base of dorsum, the area between this line and the dorsum variably suffused brick-red; an arc or angular mark from mid-costa to distal end of discal cell and back to costa preapically, the area between this arc and the costa with a variable suffusion of brick-red; a variable tuft of scales where this arc reaches the discal cell; terminal line; variable reticulation of the rest of the forewing. Female is smaller with a narrower forewing which may be completely suffused brick-red. Hindwing pale brownish-grey. A.rhombana may have a similar colour and markings but it usually has a more acute apex and a whitish hindwing.
