fw: 14-17mm (Waring & Townsend), ws 31-36mm (MBGBI9); Jul-Aug; various herbaceous and woody plants; common in S.England and Wales, local in N.England. The British form is subspecies caliginosa
ID: Forewing ground colour rich reddish-brown; markings fairly obscure; little variation; hindwing bright yellow with an irregular black subterminal fascia with the black extending subdorsally to the wing base; may or may not have a small black central crescent.
