70.113 Hydrelia sylvata (Waved Carpet)
fw: 11-13mm; Jun-Aug; alder (Alnus glutinosa), birch (Betula spp), sallows (Salix spp), sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa); NS-B SW&SE England, S&W Wales
ID: Ground colour whitish; purplish-brown crosslines (whose position is somewhat open to interpretation) - wavy subbasal, antemedian, median and postmedian and scalloped subterminal; narrow mid-brown fasciae - basal (this could be interpreted as a mid-brown basal line), just distal to antemedian line and between median and postmedian lines; a hint of small purplish-brown discal dot between antemedian and median lines (distal to the fascia); scattered purplish brown scales especially in subterminal region; blackish-brown terminal interneural dashes.
Venusia cambrica (Welsh Wave) is somewhat similarly marked but its resting posture conceals most of the hindwing; it has blackish antemedian and postmedian lines, the latter with two short blackish streaks extending distally form near its centre; and the male has bipectinate antennae.
