35.056 Metzneria lappella (Burdock Seedhead Moth)
ws: 16-20mm; Jun-Jul; greater/lesser burdock (Arctium lappa/minus); fairly common on waste ground, open woodland and downland in England
Metzneria lappella §1 male
ID: to genus from male genital key: Abdominal segment 8 forming complete ring around genitalia; uncus not divided into two lobes; valvae symmetrical; gnathos absent; tegumen with uncus shorter than valvae; uncus short and wide, hardly differentiated from tegumen; valva constricted in middle, expanded towards apex > Metzneria
ID: to species: forewing ground colour not greyish white; forewing stigmata present > M.lappella/metzneriella
These two are similar and best differentiated by genital features:
Male genitalia: Aedeagus with discrete (relatively) large cornuti; valva with a small beak; sacculus about as long as wide and rounded at apex (angulate in M.metzneriella)
Female genitalia: Apophysis ratio 1.8 : 1.6; junction sclerotisation and S8 distinctly transverse - see Metzneria
ID: to species: forewing ground colour not greyish white; forewing stigmata present > M.lappella/metzneriella
