I am considering proposing a new flexible Lewis order which numbers valid British species in the currently approved taxonomic order. The Lewis number would designate the taxonomic position of a species, so in the event of a change in taxonomic position, or the insertion of a newly discovered species, many moths would change their Lewis number (while retaining their Bradley-Fletcher number). This would work well on a spreadsheet or database to ensure species were logged in the approved order but would clearly be problematic in published literature. It also requires a body akin to the British Ornithological Union to review what constitutes a valid British species and to approve the taxonomic ordering.
I intend to illustrate these pages with appropriate photographs but the basic information is there.

I've been avidly trapping and photographing moths for 4 years now. I've just passed 900 species photographed and 300 species trapped in the garden. I'm going to try developing this website to share some of my pictures and some of the knowledge gained. I hope this will not just be a collection of pretty pictures but that it will also be an educational and informative resource for those new to the study of moths and butterflies and it may be of some value to those with a bit more experience too. Not sure at this stage how successful I will be, but it is a long-term project.
